An epidemic of picornavirus and adenovirus conjunctivitis.

چکیده
A pandemic of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis occurred in south-east Asia during 1970 and 1971, and became epidemic in Lucknow in May 1971. From the conjunctival swabs adenovirus-like agents were isolated in monkey kidney tissue culture; one was typed as adenovirus 2. In paired sera rising antibody titres were found against an adeno-like agent isolated and the picornavirus (EC2/71) isolated in Singapore. The epidemics in south-east Asia were caused by a picornavirus while in Lucknow both adenovirus and picornavirus appeared to be implicated.

Incidence of Adenoviral Conjunctivitis in Patients Referred to the Iran University Affiliated Hospital
Background and Aims: Adenovirus is one of the causative agents of viral conjunctivitis. Approximately an average of 40% of viral conjunctivitis is due to adenovirus infection. The rate of infection is usually the highest during the spring and summer months. In this study attempt was made to evaluate the incidence of conjunctivitis due to adenovirus infection in patients referred to one of the...
متن کاملEpidemic keratoconjunctivitis and chronic papillary conjunctivitis in London due to adenovirus type 19.
Since July 1973 cases of keratoconjunctivitis resembling epidemic keratoconjunctivitis were observed in the External Eye Disease Clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital; City Road, London. Adenovirus type 19 was isolated in human embryonic kidney cells from 21 patients. The majority were males between 20 and 40 years old. A small hospital outbreak involving six patients occurred. Clinical features of...
متن کاملAn outbreak of adenovirus type 4 conjunctivitis.
An unusually large outbreak of conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus type 4 involved 113 proved cases during a 7-month period. Though the disease was less severe than is commonly seen in epidemic keratoconjunctivitis caused by other serotypes, the cornea was affected in 23% of cases and symptoms persisted for at least 5 weeks in 6 patients. A concurrent increase in nonocular adenovirus type 4 inf...
متن کاملIntermediate human adenovirus type 22/H10,19,37 as a new etiological agent of conjunctivitis.
Eight strains of a new intermediate adenovirus were isolated in the course of an investigation of conjunctivitis in Hiroshima City, Japan. The strain was first isolated in July 1986. All eight strains were isolated from conjunctival swab samples from patients with conjunctivitis, mainly epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. The virus was typed as adenovirus type 22 in neutralization tests and was rela...
متن کاملNo sequence variation in part of the hexon and the fibre genes of adenovirus 8 isolated from patients with conjunctivitis or epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) in Norway during
Background/Aims—Several local epidemics of keratoconjunctivitis/conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus type 8 (Ad8) occurred in Norway from August 1995 to May 1996. A smaller epidemic occurred in 1992. The Ad8 hexon forms the surface of the virion and contains the hypervariable regions loop I1 and loop I2. The fibre mediates the primary contact with cells. Sequence variation in hexon and fibre gen...
